Abstract

Due to the evolution of ecosystems and societies, the world is becoming increasingly complex. This requires the integrated management of various resources and sectors such as water resources, disasters, and the environment. For this integrated management, the use of the school catchment is fundamental. In order to further develop its use in practice, the objective of this study was to evaluate various aspects of school catchments. The bibliographic survey of the subject identified that the term “school catchment” was used in the 1960s in the Brazilian Northeast, which is at this moment considered to be the first in Brazil and the world. Based on the analysis, the present study defines a school catchment as a catchment where monitoring and/or field diagnostics take place, and which is used for scientific research and didactic activities for learning science, education, and any kind of intellectual training for all citizens. Because of its social function, the school catchment is the ideal unit for hydrology, especially socio-hydrology, intensifying citizen science and building hydrosolidarity in society. Demonstrating the high effectiveness of the use of the school catchment with two case studies, this study suggests the creation of the National Program of School Catchment in Brazil.
