Mosaicos de experiências e transnacionalidade: trabalhadores afro-caribenhos na Amazônia pós-abolição (Porto Velho, c. 1907–C. 1922)

This article investigates the presence and experiences of Black laborers who migrated from the British Caribbean to the city of Porto Velho, Brazil, during the early decades of the twentieth century. This movement occurred in the context of increasing international capital investment in northern Brazil and parts of Central America, which created new labor opportunities and prompted Afro-Caribbean men and women to seek improved living conditions abroad. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Transnational History and the historiography of post-emancipation societies in the Americas, the article argues that the strategies of contestation and accommodation employed by these migrants were deeply rooted in traditions of resistance forged in the aftermath of the abolition of slavery in the British Caribbean after 1834. These practices played a crucial role in shaping the migrants’ integration into the racialized social dynamics of post-emancipation Amazonia.
