A Descrição da Grécia de Pausânias, escrita no século II d.C., é composta por dez livros que detalham regiões específicas da Grécia continental. Além de descrever geograficamente cada local, Pausânias oferece uma narrativa descritiva que abarca desde os mitos fundadores até seu tempo contemporâneo, com um foco especial em monumentos artísticos, rituais religiosos e questões políticas. Este artigo analisa a obra, abordando seus percursos e recepção histórica, a cronologia e composição dos textos, e debates sobre a autoria e o gênero literário da Periēgēsis, que pode ou não ser considerada uma obra historiográfica. A discussão também destaca a vida de Pausânias, provavelmente originário da Lídia, e o impacto contínuo da Descrição da Grécia nos estudos da antiguidade clássica.
