Abstract

In this article, I will focus on the topic that my interlocutors have focused on in the conversations we have had in Unit 3 of the São Luís Penitentiary Complex: the observance of their rights while serving their sentences. This means that these rights need to be known and demanded. However, the objective conditions in which they find themselves in prison force them to develop a method to demand their rights. We will see that there is a reformist critique of the State in these demands, but it is part of a broader tactic. This tactic takes into account a constant calculation on the part of my interlocutors regarding their actions, so that they do not exalt themselves, but also do not submit themselves to abuse. It is based on a clash over exclusion lines, in which my interlocutors affirm themselves as “human” and part of society, even though they are prisoners. The tactic in question is also part of the project that involves confronting the police head-on, in the way that this is feasible within the prison environment.
