Jean-Jacques Rousseau, historically considered one of the greatest intellectuals of the eighteenth century, left a legacy of works involving different areas, such as politics, education, society, the arts, among others. In this sense, through a bibliographic review, the present work aims to briefly understand some of Rousseau’s many writings, especially the Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts, the Discourse on the Origin of Inequality among men, the Social contract and, finally, Emilio or Education, aiming to understand how these works were relevant to the area of education. To this end, we considered the historical moment in which the author is part of, marked by the cultural movement characteristic of European thought called Enlightenment, or Century of Lights, which reflected the political and social context of the eighteenth century, impacting on the pedagogical currents and generations of intellectuals of the following centuries, lasting until contemporaneity.
