PROJETO ÁGUA BOA:

A PARCERIA ENTRE GOVERNO DO ESTADO DO AMAZONAS E UNICEF BRASIL PARA SUPERAR DESAFIOS DE ABASTECIMENTO DE ÁGUA E ADAPTAÇÃO CLIMÁTICA EM ESCOLAS E COMUNIDADES RIBEIRINHAS NO MUNICÍPIO DE CAREIRO DA VÁRZEA-AM

Abstract

: Due to the challenges experienced in Amazonas caused by frequent climate crises, the State Government, through the State Secretariat for Urban and Metropolitan Development – SEDURB and the Amazonas Sanitation Company – COSAMA, in partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund – UNICEF implemented the Água Boa Project in the municipality of Careiro da Várzea-AM. It began in 2020, during the health emergency of the Covid-19 pandemic with the installation of three Collective Alternative Solution Systems for Water Supply for Human Consumption – SAC. UNICEF and the Stockholm International Water Institute –SIWI, carried out the WASH BAT, an acronym in English for "Bottleneck Analysis Tool in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Sector", and the “Participatory Assessment of Climate Risks for the Water Sector Water, Sanitation and Hygiene”, focusing on the municipality of Careiro da Várzea, which identified the main difficulties in accessing drinking water and sanitation in the municipality. The Água Boa Project was implemented to provide drinking water for human consumption to riverside populations in socio-environmental vulnerable conditions in the municipality of Careiro da Várzea. The SAC methodology includes the stages of coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and chlorination. It included adaptation to make it more resilient to hydrological events intensified by climate change. The Água Boa Project has already benefited approximately 4 thousand people served with quality water for human consumption in the intervention and coverage areas.
