This article, inserted in the field of the history of education, aims to analyze the social, political and economic context in which the Faculty of Education of the University of Amazonas, currently FACED/UFAM, developed. It becomes important to revisit and analyze the history of this educational institution, on the occasion of its five decades of activity in order to offer Brazilian society teachers with adequate training for teaching in Basic Education. With a historiographical cut, it was necessary to go back to the 1960s, when the Pedagogy Course still belonged to the FFCL, to walk through the 1970s, when the unit was effectively created based on Law n.º 5.540 /68, until the years when it definitely installed on the university campus in the 1980s. We used the bibliography analysis methodology (CUNHA, 2016; MENDONÇA, 2000; RÉMOND, 2003) and the analysis of journals (LUCA, 2006; PASQUINI; TOLEDO, 2014), in addition to the category School Institution (DUBET, 2006; SANFELICE, 2008; NÓVOA, 1995) to develop our study.
