Abstract

The History course at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) was created through Resolution No. 003/80 of August 14, 1980, and was authorized to operate from the first semester of 1981. Its creation was based on the correct justification that There was a shortage of History teachers in basic education, which until then had been supplied by professionals from other related areas. The first generation of historians at UFAM, which includes Francisco Jorge dos Santos, Geraldo Pantaleão Sá Peixoto Pinheiro, Vânia Maria Tereza Novoa Tadros, Patrícia Maria Alves de Melo, Sínval Carlos Mello Gonçalves, Hideraldo Lima da Costa and Luiz Francisco Rodrigues Barreiro Bitton Telles da Rocha, and coordinated by the professor José Ribamar Bessa Freire, was responsible for the institutionalization of the course and the renewal of History in Amazonas, producing seminal works for our historiography. In this article, the trajectory of this group was reconstructed and their academic productions were analyzed, in order to highlight their importance for Amazonian historical research.
