Abstract
This paper aims to critically address the concept of social control, considering its characterization both in the context of the relationship between the State and society and in the context of the relationship between the Church and society. The main axis of articulation of the study focuses on the theme of sin, in view of the centrality of this reference as a tool of social control intended by ecclesiastical elites in medieval Christian society
