KNIGHTLY HERALDRY IN THE ORMESBY PSALTER
Abstract
In this paper we mean to study the coats of arms presented at the english illuminated manuscript called Ormesby Psalter, produced between the ending of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries in Norwichs region, England. To do so, we see Heraldry as constituted by a group of symbols that form a langugage and, therefore, has as its goal the transmission of diverse narratives. To understand this mean of communication, we begin the article with a brif historical introduction on Heraldry’s use and development. This is done with the help of classical authors such as Mauric Keen (1984) and michel Pastoureau (2017). We continue , through the reading of authores as Michelle Brown (2018) and Michael A. Michael (2019), by selecting and presenting the recurrences of coats of arms among the psalter’s imagery. We do not mean to end debates on the matter, but to show thtat there are plenty of possibilities in the research on this language, going beyond the simplistic identifying funcition.
