Abstract

RELATIONS BETWEEN PUBLIC POLICIES AND SCHOOL FAILURE

 

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the relationships between public policies and school failure nowadays. We start with school/educational psychology and education as theoretical framework. The first part of the article presents historical considerations about the phenomenon of school failure to present days, understanding it as a multi-determined issue. The second part presents the data on the reality of Brazilian public education, i.e., difficulties that affect the quality of education, as influenced by Brazilian public policies concerned with meeting national and international goals related to education. We conclude by discussing the current developments of school failure and Brazilian public policies, with emphasis on the role of psychology in the face of medicalization of childhood and society as one of the factors that lead to school failure.
