the understanding of suicide and self-injury by Amazonian Elementary School students
Keywords:
Yellow september, self-destructive behavior, self-injurious behavior, amazonian students, phenomenological methodAbstract
Yellow September is characterized by social advances in the sense of reducing the number of self-destructive and self-injurious behaviors so characteristic of contemporary times. Research with adolescents has been scarce in recent years. The objective of this study was to understand the conception of elementary school students from a public school in the city of Manaus about this event and its possible consequences. There were 22 students from the 6th to the 9th grade who were assigned the questions: “what do you understand as yellow September” and “what would you like to talk about suicide and self-injury”. Some parameters of the phenomenological-psychological research method in psychology were used, such as: exhaustive reading of the writing, identification of Meaning Units, elaboration of analysis categories. The analysis was based on the theory of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, as well as other authors who have studied the subject. 4 analysis categories were elaborated: 1) A day to avoid the act; 2) Possible risk factors; 3) Protective factors; 4) Questioning what was said. It is concluded that the study achieved its objectives, considering that the students brought a comprehensive and pluridimensional understanding of the theme, which made it possible to observe that we need to go beyond our absolute truths when we seek to understand the look that this age group casts on the various specificities and characteristics of contemporary life.
