Abstract

Adolescence is characterized as a period of great and profound transformations. A very present aspect that has been brought up in the literature concerns exacerbated emotional issues and situations with which they cannot deal. In view of this, the practice of self-injury or cutting occurs, which, by the way, has been highly prevalent among students of both genders. The objective of this study was to understand the dimension of the practice of self-injury in the life of an elementary school student accompanied by the Psychological Duty at School, in Manaus. The methodological route is the phenomenological method of research in Psychology in its descriptive and exploratory bias, qualitative bias. Listening was based on the theoretical framework of Maurice Merleau-Ponty from theoretical constructs such as corporeity, own body, symbolic body, intercorporeity. The participant is an elementary school student, 13 years old, male, black, with no religion. Listening provided a deeper understanding of the action and how factors that predispose to self-injury are those related to guilt for the father's death, mourning for this significant loss, fear and frustration of not knowing how to deal with certain situations and this has led to emotional conflicts that result in self-injury. It is concluded that active listening enables the re-dimensioning of the being-oneself and the understanding of the pluridimensionality of the body and the experience of the body that is mine, a body that is me in Ponty's work.
