MAINTENANCE OF NIKKEI CULTURE THROUGH HAIKU

While being ethnically Japanese and residing in Brazil, the traditions and customs held by their community represents their perspective on their Japanese heritage. In this study, I will be examining the works of four authors of haiku: Matsuo Bashō, Nenpuku Satō , Guilherme de Almeida, and Teruko Oda. By contrasting the differences between traditional haiku used in Japan in addition to modern haiku in Brazil, I hope to better explain the perspectives of Nikkei Brazilians on self-identity and culture.
