This article examines aspects of the social-historic situation of the Black population in the United States through the lens of “Left”, by African-American writer Nikky Finney. The work, a protest narrative poem, was inspired by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. Confronted with the marked inaction of the federal government towards the suffering of a significant portion of the local population, majorly Black, in the aftermath of the disaster, Finney’s lines invite the reader to reflect upon the unequal access to the protection that the State should grant all American citizens.
