THE BAROQUE FORM IN THE GYPSY CHRIST, BY SOPHIA DE MELLO BREYNER ANDRESEN

Abstract

O Cristo cigano is a book published in 1961 by the Portuguese poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, a prominent name in modern poetry in Portugal. The inspiration for the composition of the work came from a Sevillian legend told by the Brazilian poet João Cabral de Melo Neto to the writer. When we read the poems that make up the work, we observe that, although they are inserted in the context of the 20th century, they dialogue with the Baroque, an aesthetic that had its heyday in the 16th and 17th centuries. For this reason, the present study aims to study the elements of baroque art present in O Cristo cigano. Thus, in order to analyze the book, we consulted authors who discuss issues related to the investigated themes, such as Octávio Paz (1984), Afranio Coutinho (1986), Rosa Maria Martelo (2014) and Benedito Nunes (1981). In the research, we observed that duality, contrast, naturalism and eroticism, important elements in the construction of the Baroque, mark Sophia Andresen's book, therefore, showing the reader how Literature is not watertight and isolated in time and space, given that it is in constant dialogue with the past and the present and with other artistic expressions.
