Abstract

This article critically examines the role of the Namajuba Mining Association (AMINA) in promoting community development in the Administrative Post of Mazua, Mozambique, between 2015 and 2023. Established in the aftermath of a tragic mine collapse in 2013, AMINA emerged as an institutional attempt to shift from informal artisanal mining to a regulated and collective structure. Using a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and document analysis, the study reveals structural limitations, weak technical support, and fragile community participation. The analysis draws upon theoretical frameworks of territory, human development, and social justice, particularly the sociology of absences. Findings indicate that AMINA, rather than acting as a transformative agent, remains embedded in an institutional logic disconnected from local realities. For the association to become a meaningful vector of social change, it must prioritize transparency, inclusive dialogue, and technical capacity-building. Alignment with national public policies and reinforcement of community leadership appear essential for its revitalization and long-term sustainability.
