Abstract
The constant floods that have plagued the city of Beira in each rainy season are a serious concern for the inhabitants of this territorial unit in their daily lives, the purpose of this article is to analyze the possible risks arising from urban floods in Beira, particularly in the rainy season. For the materialization of the study, we resorted to bibliographic consultation, direct observation accompanied by Check list, analysis of documents referring to hydrological risks in the city of Beira provided by INGD and use of ArcGIS 10.4 software in the elaboration of maps of the city of Beira both for geographic framework and for the representation of urban flooding phenomena and associated risk factors. For the analysis of risks arising from urban floods, a local altimetry map was prepared and analyzed, combining the areas of flooding observed in the most recent rainy seasons. As for the results, the study identified the following neighborhoods vulnerable to the risks of flooding; Manga Mascarenhas, Manganhe, Vaz, Munhava Matope, Dunda, Mungaça, Chota, Chinguissura, Inhamizua, Matadouro and identified the main risks such as collapse of housing in fragile communities that culminates in loss of human life and loss of agricultural crops and displacement, which in turn since it contributes to delaying the socio-economic development of communities, in this context, actions were suggested for its respective mitigation.
