The Experience of the Hospital Psychologist in the Oncological Context

The work of hospital psychologists in oncology units presents specific challenges that require technical knowledge, sensitivity, and empathy. This study aims to understand the experiences of hospital psychologists who work with cancer patients, highlighting the main challenges and the practices used to assist patients and their families. The study was carried out through field research using a semi-structured interview with a psychologist specialized in the area, allowing for an in-depth approach to the subject. The results show that the main challenges faced include a lack of recognition for psychological work, difficulties in communicating with the multidisciplinary team and the emotional overload generated by contact with suffering and death. The coping strategies used by the professionals include personal therapy, leisure time, and the search for further training. The study highlights the importance of the work of hospital psychologists in promoting mental health and improving the quality of life of cancer patients, as well as emphasizing the need for professional support and recognition for these professionals.
