Abstract

This study addresses the notable lack of validated psychometric instruments to measure the construct of Self-gratitude, defined as the capacity for personal recognition and appreciation for one's achievements and qualities. Given the importance of this construct for personal development and mental health, this research's main objective was to develop and validate a specific psychometric instrument to measure Self-gratitude. In order to achieve this objective, the Self-Gratitude Scale (SGS) was used in a diverse sample of 256 Brazilian participants from different regions of the country. The SGS, composed of 11 carefully selected items, was subjected to statistical methods to ensure the reliability of the results, including principal component analysis (PCA) and multidimensional techniques (SSA). The results pointed to a unidimensional scale structure with a remarkably high level of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.930). Furthermore, the SGS demonstrated significant positive correlations with self-esteem scales, consolidating its convergent and discriminant validity. This finding reinforces the applicability of SGS in research within the domains of cognitive and positive psychology. In short, the Self-Gratitude Scale emerges as a promising instrument, offering new perspectives for future studies in the emerging field of Self-Gratitude, a topic hitherto little explored in contemporary psychological literature.
