Abstract

The present paper aims to review the main concepts of genetic engineering in pigs, covering its historical aspects, its applications, the different methodologies, as well as addressing the use of new genetic editing tools. The genetic engineering in pigs is very important and are justified for their applications, for both use in the pig husbandry and biomedical research. There are several methodologies available for the genetic modifications in pigs, which are variable in their applicability and efficiency. Although several techniques can be employed in pigs, some not achieve high success rates, while others are more promising. In addition, current genome-editing tools it is in use to improve significantly genetic engineering in pigs. However, the methodology must adapt to the laboratory conditions and the objectives of the intended genetic modification.
