YŌGA AND NIHONGA: JAPANESE ART AND NATIONAL IDENTITY

The present work analyzes Japanese art and culture after the Meiji restoration, relating the political issues and the crisis of national identity and its repercussion in the Japanese art scene. It also analyzes the contacts between Japanese art and Western art, as well as its repercussions. The work also emphasizes the avant-gardes defenders of the Yōga (paintings of western style) and Nihonga (paintings of Japanese style).
