The paper aims to present the results obtained at the Literature Festival, held in 2019, at the Federal Institute of Pernambuco, Campus Barreiros. Firstly, the literary work Primas em cordel: versões rimadas de 12 clássicos da literatura universal, by Stélio Torquato Lima, was read; secondly, it was distributed to students of public schools through PNBE Literário 2018, an action carried out by the National Program of Library of School (PNBE). This experience report attests that “the exercise of imagination that the reading of every literary text requires is one of the relevant approaches for the reader to assume his or her position as subject” (COSSON, 2018, p. 50, our translation). Thus, our theoretical fundaments were built from the observations made by Cosson (2016, 2018, 2020), Calvino (1993) and Machado (2009). The engagement of the students as protagonists both in the readings and discussions of the guiding work and in the recreation through theatrical text and its subsequent staging proved that, when literary language is effectively understood, the act of reading does make sense.
