ABSTRACT: the objective of this work is to study the influence of the Spanish picaresque in the play “Auto da compadecida”, by Ariano Suassuna, and more specifically in the characterization of João Grilo’s character, protagonist of the work, understanding such influence under a broader focus of relations texts that form the western canon from the Middle Ages. To this end, we will use a theoretical reference linked to comparative studies, based on the theory of mimesis and hypertextuality, formulated by the French critic, Gérard Genette, in his book “Palimpsestes: la litterature au second degré”. In addition, we will draw an overview of the influences of Suassuna’s work, especially those of medieval matrices, which also had some influence on picaresque literature. We intend to present the rich hypertextuality that developed from medieval sources, passing through the capital works of the Spanish picaresque to flow into the theater of Ariano.
KEY-WORDS: Spanish picaresque; Middle Ages; mimesis; hypertextuality; comparative literature.
