This paper aims on to reflect on the representation of the sublime as aesthetic category in the tale “A enchente” (“The flood”), that integrates the collection A vingança do boto (The revenge of boto), of the amazonian writer Arthur Engrácio. To this end, we start from the hypothesis that the fictional text in analysis is divided into three moments, the first concentrating the elements of sublimity incident on the narrative, the second dilutes them and the third one annuls them. Our theoretical approach is developed from the classic conception elaborated by Dionísio Longino (2015) in the treatise On the Sublime and the typology of the concept established by Edmund Burke (2016) in the study Philosophical investigation on the origin of our ideas of Sublime and Beautiful. Following these references, we observe the imaginary, semantic and tropological elements of the text, from which we infer how the figuration of nature and the feeling of fear and terror lived by the characters are configured as a manifestation of the sublime.
