INTERIOR MONOLOGUE IN JÚLIA LOPES DE ALMEIDA: AN ANALYSIS OF THE TALE "O CASO DE RUTE"

Abstract

This article analizes the interior monologue technique in the tale "O caso de Rute" of the Brazilian writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida. This female writer represents an important name of Brazilian literature between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. With more than 30 years of production, among tales, chronicles, novels and others, her work is composed of different genres and themes. Julia was an active voice for the political and social causes of her time, such as social inequality and women’s rights, and openly opposed slavery, which is reflected in her work as a writer. The book Ânsia Eterna (1903) brings together tales that deal mostly with themes related to the feminine, and brings some narratives with elements of the gothic, as happens in the tale "O caso de Rute". Regarding the interior monologue, a technique often associated with modernism, but that permeates literature since long before this movement (CARVALHO, 2012), we will analyze how Júlia uses this technique at different times in the text, producing different narrative effects. The analytical method was given through the contribution of the authors: Carvalho (2012) and Humphrey (1976).
