Abstract

Meningiomas are the most common benign brain tumors and account for up to 30% of all primary intracranial tumors. It affects mainly the female sex on average age of 45; when occurs in adolescents, it should be cogitate the hypothesis of Neurofibromatosis type I. There are several risk factors, among them is the exposure to ionizing radiation. This tumor is originated from arachnoid cells, and is associated with a monosomy of chromosome 22 (the most common abnormality) and the allele loss of chromosome 1, 10 and 14. It is classified in 3 degrees, which recurrence is associated with higher degrees; however the malignant transformation is a rare event. The treatment is surgical, but there are other therapies that can be used in complicated, recurrent and malignant cases. There are the factors of poor prognosis, some stands out, such as the age (in younger patients the tumor is more aggressive), brain invasion and small area of resection. The adult patient presented, held complete resection of grade I meningioma, evolving after 3 years with recurrence and malignant transformation of the tumor.
