ABSTRACT: The Alcir Matos Occupation started at the end

2015, after the Manaus municipal authority promoted the involuntary and violent removal of the inhabitants of the old Cidade do Luzes [City of Lights] – an irregular occupation located in the neighbourhood of Tarumã and on land classified as Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) [Area of Environmental Protection] – where approximately two thousand people lived. In a condition of total socio-political helplessness in the face of the public authority, the Alcir Matos Occupation is mostly made up of ex-residents from the Cidade do Luzes. There are approximately 40 families involved. The Occupation is coordinated by União Nacional por Moradia Popular (UNMP) [National Union for Social Housing], an institution that works to articulate the right to social housing and access to public policies, within the scope of the national Legislative, Executive and Judicial powers, for the occupants. Our hypothesis is that these conditions (involuntary and violent removal and social and political helplessness) can provoke processes of psychic suffering (trauma and helplessness) that translate into the socio-political realm as alienation and identification with hegemonic discourses that criminalize, pathologize and marginalize, placing these subjects in positions of silence and preventing the expression of their losses and suffering.
Key words: Urban Occupation; Social Housing; Psychic suffering; socio-political helplessness.
