Among these perspectives is that of Phenomenological-Existential Psychology, characterized by the understanding that the Other should not be the diagnostic hypothesis it carries; it is not distorted behavior resulting from an inability to cope with everyday situations; it is not constituted by past traumas. However, we experience our habitat in the region with the largest number of indigenous peoples in Brazil. Given this important element, we offer a perspective on this sociocultural context and the understanding that Psychology, in this specific case, should focus on belonging, cosmology, and the intersectionalities present therein. This study is supported by a qualitative research approach, presenting a descriptive, exploratory, and reflective essay. This paper explores the nuances and details of being an Amazonian member of indigenous peoples and presents the production of LABFEN (Laboratory of Phenomenological-Existential Psychology) in terms of supervised dissertations. It concludes with the certainty that it is necessary to prioritize the recognition of ancestral wisdom and to show that, despite the thematic diversity of studies, much remains to be produced and researched, provided that the themes are not subjected solely to the perspective of something created and elaborated by other peoples that in no way respond to or correspond to the experiences lived here.

Ewerton Helder Bentes de Castro Janderson Costa Meira Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 8 48 Evaluation of child development and adverse experiences in children aged four to six in a private school in the northeastern region //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18972
Child development is influenced by biological, social, and emotional factors, with early childhood education being fundamental for building the cognitive, motor, and socioemotional foundations. This study aimed to understand child development and the adverse experiences of children aged four to six attending a private school in the Northeast region of Brazil. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative study using documentary research and two protocols: the Assessment of Adverse Situations in Child Development and the Dimensional Inventory for Assessing Child Development with family members of 61 children aged four to six attending a private preschool. The profile showed that 72.13% of the children showed typical development in the cognitive domain and 70.49% in adaptive behavior. In contrast, 62.79% performed below average in expressive language and 55.74% in receptive/expressive communication. In the gross motor domain, 49.18% of the children also presented difficulties. Regarding adverse situations, the most frequent events were death in the family (32.79%), domestic accidents (29.51%), and parental separation (22.95%), revealing potential impacts on development and learning. It is concluded that difficulties in both development and experiences of adverse situations can impact children's behavior and school adaptation; therefore, early identification of these factors in daily pedagogical practices is crucial for effective interventions in development and learning.
Francisca Tatiana Dourado Gonçalves Maria de Nazareth Rodrigues Malcher de Oliveira Silva Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 49 76 Trajectory of PROCISA/UFRR Phenomenological Research in Health and Care //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18975
This article presents the contributions of phenomenology to qualitative research in the Graduate Program in Health Sciences (PROCISA) at the Federal University of Roraima. Based on a trajectory initiated in 2011, it describes the theoretical and methodological consolidation of phenomenology as a scientific framework in the Amazon. Grounded in Edmund Husserl's phenomenology and Edith Stein's philosophical anthropology, it highlights elements such as consciousness, intentionality, epoché, intersubjective relations, empathy, and the three-dimensional structure of the person (corporeity, psyche, and spirit). Through academic mentorship experiences and analysis of dissertations, the potential of phenomenological research to understand complex human phenomena — suffering, grief, chronic pain, mental health, and spirituality — in the Amazonian context is evidenced. The phenomenological interview, in addition to data collection, promotes empathetic listening and acceptance, respecting the other's uniqueness. In times marked by a loss of meaning, phenomenology repositions the human being at the center of health practices, reaffirming the value of care and lived experience for an integral and ethical understanding of life.
Joelma Ana Gutierrez Espíndula Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 77 100 20 years of research in the Phenomenology, Theory and Clinic line of the PPGP in Psychology at UFPA //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18976
The Graduate Program in Psychology at the Federal University of Pará (PPGP/UFPA) was founded in 2005 at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences, offering a Master's degree. Psychiatric disorders are examples of chronic health conditions with a progressive and disabling course, representing a public health problem and posing an enormous challenge to patient care and psychosocial adjustment. Little research has been conducted on how patients and their families understand the communication of the diagnosis. This study aims to understand the perception of communication of the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders among patients and their families in light of Martin Heidegger's philosophy—meanings and significance in discourses. It is the result of a dissertation and falls within the field of Health Psychology and the Psychology and Phenomenology research line of the Phenomenological-Existential Psychology Laboratory (FAPSI/UFAM/CNPq). This is a study based on a qualitative research approach, using the phenomenological method of research in Psychology with a descriptive, exploratory, and reflective approach. The interview analysis drew on the thinking of Martin Heidegger. The phenomenological-psychological method of research in psychology was used. An audio-recorded phenomenological interview was used, based on a guiding question, with further developments after the question was posed. The participants were 12 patients and 3 family members. Two categories with subcategories were extracted from the study: 1. Communication of the diagnosis: I refuse to accept the verdict; 2. Being-with-the-other: the experience of support and non-support. It is concluded that, based on the communication of the diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder, a series of elements emerge that reshape the existence of patients and family members treated by a mental health institution, characterizing the multidimensionality of being in the face of facticity.
Denis Guimarães Pereira Ewerton Helder Bentes de Castro Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 122 150 Reading and listening to lived experiences: //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18978
This is an exploratory theoretical study that seeks to combine notions of Gestalt clinical theory, Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic phenomenology, and Franz Fanon's political clinical theory. In this journey of reading and listening to the world of texts, we articulate understandings from the perspective of free social identities and the dynamics of recognizing Black people as ethical, political, and cultural practices capable of disrupting a supposed discourse of truth and reaffirming the power of just and plural historical, cultural, and health-related meanings. The method included books and articles as sources analyzed. Hermeneutics situates the narratives of the colonizer and the colonized, conceived as free people. We conclude that a racialized Gestalt clinical practice favors Black people's increased creative adjustment, embodying the perception of psychosocial health and relationship needs. This work, entitled "The Clinic of Three Perspectives and Abusive Relationships," proposes a multifaceted analysis of these dynamics, seeking to explore not only the factors that contribute to the formation of dysfunctional relationships, but also the therapeutic methods that can be effective in their resolution. It is a qualitative theoretical study. Several important dimensions are observed in relation to this very current and contemporary theme, since there is a range of factors to be taken into consideration. The Clinic of Three Perspectives proposes, based on its phenomenological theoretical support, that the therapist understand the person by considering their perspective on themselves, their perspective on the other, and the perspective they cast on the other's perspective. This last one is the most present in so-called abusive emotional relationships. Several important themes are considered, such as: a look at abusive relationships, the Clinic of the Three Perspectives, emotional impacts, the influence of culture on relationships, identification of signs of abuse, consequences of abusive relationships, interventions and management. It is concluded that the "Clinic of the Three Perspectives" makes it possible to unveil how individual perspectives, regarding the understanding of oneself, the perspective on the other, and the perspective cast upon the other's perspective, particularly those of victims, intertwine to construct a complex web of abuse. Therefore, it becomes crucial to observe this multidimensionality of factors present and the contribution of significant interventions that empower the abused person to confront and overcome these situations, which are still very present in our contemporary world.
Ewerton Helder Bentes de Castro Janderson Costa Meira Hadriely Regina Pessoa de Souza Muriel Kiane Guimarães Jacob Isabella Soares Faleiros Isabelle Menezes dos Santos Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 203 241 Dynamics of hospitalization and treatment of women at the Juliano Moreira hospice, Belém/PA //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18981
The Juliano Moreira Asylum (JM), founded in 1919 in Belém, Pará, was one of the leading psychiatric institutions in northern Brazil. Understanding the history of the asylum is an important milestone in preventing the repetition of psychiatric practices based on forced hospitalization, misdiagnosis, isolation, and electroshock. A comprehensive approach to women's mental health requires dignified and inclusive treatment, so as not to "incarcerate" women, even in the absence of mental "pathologies," whether by family members, police officers, or psychiatrists. Therefore, we present a literature review of the clinical profile of JM inmates, based on a survey of public documents from the Pará Public Archives and scientific literature on women's mental health, post-Brazilian psychiatric reform, gender studies, and phenomenological studies. This convergence reveals how the integration of digital technology, from the earliest Web protocols to the ecosystem of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), can reconfigure everyday experience by shortening geographical distances and connecting people, but also by homogenizing interactions and suppressing the encounter with the other. The central objective is to examine how these external structures influence existential dynamics, in order to question how technology transforms the human relation with the world, which potentially occurs in an instantaneous and flattened manner. The methodology is qualitative and bibliographical, promoting a dialectical articulation between Heideggerian technology (Ge-stell) and Floridian infosphere: while modern technology operates through the illusion of proximity without true proximity (Nähe), the hyper-historical stage engenders the onlife experience, a hybrid world unfolding beyond the online/offline dichotomy. The findings point to a tension in which technology enables humans to escape their routine, inviting a more attentive dwelling in the infosphere and fostering self-critique regarding their own experiences.
Arthur Curty Solordanos Maria de Nazareth Rodrigues Malcher de Oliveira Silva Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 292 308 A Qualitative Study on Self-Care in Men's Health in Belém do Pará, Brazil //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18984
The National Policy for Comprehensive Healthcare for Men (PNAISH) in Brazil aims to increase men's attendance in healthcare services. Therefore, the religious phenomenon, through mystical pursuits and the practice of syncretism, involves a myriad of practices and rituals aimed at fostering the individual's well-being. It permeates the context of human civilization, and this is no exception in the region we inhabit: the Amazon. The objective of this study was to understand how Amazonians, specifically those from Amazonas, understand their historicity from their initial immersion in African-based cults, using existential phenomenology as the basis for analysis. This qualitative research employed the phenomenological method in its descriptive, exploratory, and reflective characterizations. The study used phenomenological interviews with 11 participants in religious practices guided by the Federation of Umbanda and Afro-Brazilian Cults of the State of Amazonas (FUCABEAM). Audio-recorded interviews were conducted between March and August 2015. Several categories were developed, and this study presents two of them and their subcategories: Living in Religion: The Lived World; Constituting a New Being: Subjectivity; The meaning of being a member of an African-based religion; the meaning of assuming the personality characteristics of their masters or guides; the meaning of the daily facticities that resulted in them being who they are today: leaders of terreiros/barracões, taking responsibility for each of those who seek them, with the goal of promoting knowledge, relief, and care. Theory and practice merge in which the first (theory) instrumentalizes the look and the second (practice) decodes the theory that supports it. The content guides the teaching method, but they (the methods) evolve, change or are given new meanings. The evaluation validates or not the planned objectives, but mainly, it reorients the planning action. The investigation, which is based on a review of recent literature, aims to identify the emotional and unconscious mechanisms that truly guided our choices, rather than merely analyzing consumer behavior on the surface. The fact that 95% of purchasing decisions occur within this invisible plane makes it clear that advertising interacts directly with our biology, triggering hormonal responses that shape preferences without our knowledge. The analysis demonstrates that a purchase is not an isolated event but rather a mosaic where influences from our culture, social circle, personal belongings, and psychology are mixed together to change consumption into a way for us to express who we are. The study also offers a critical look at how media frequently only ends up eclipsing the discourse of brands, and confronts the underlying ethical issues: the possibility of shady manipulation, discrimination by algorithms, and the encouragement of prejudiced consumerism. Finally, it is acknowledged that a responsible path is necessary for the future of neuromarketing. This calls for clear rules, consumers who are more aware of the tactics used, and, above all, professionals with strong ethical training. Despite these challenges, the text highlights that Brazil, with its immense diversity, has a niche to lead this transformation and create a more inclusive and conscious use of this powerful tool.
Mariana Araújo Pereira Rebecca Chagas Bellora Ygor Karel Nascimento de Souza Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 550 567 Childhood and Clinical Understanding: //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18996
This article focuses on child psychological counseling, discussed through the lens of phenomenological-existential understanding. It begins with a historical reflection on the social construction of childhood, highlighting how its representation has changed over time and influenced the ways of understanding and addressing children’s psychological suffering. In the contemporary context, there has been a significant increase in diagnoses and the medicalization of children, emphasizing the need to restore a comprehensive and humanized view of childhood existence. Within this scenario, psychologists are called to go beyond technical evaluations and to offer a space for listening and acceptance that allows the child to express themselves in their entirety. Grounded in phenomenological-existential principles, child counseling proposes a practice centered on the child’s being-in-the-world, valuing play as a privileged means of expression and self-revelation. Through clinical reports, the article illustrates the importance of bonding, freedom, and the therapist’s epoché² posture in fostering understanding that arises from lived experience rather than predetermined categories. It concludes that phenomenological listening expands the possibilities for understanding the child, promoting more authentic, creative, and coherent interventions aligned with their singular existence.
Leticia de Morais Teixeira do Carmo Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 568 586 Teaching Through Stories: //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18997
This article aims to reflect on the potential of cultural narratives as a pedagogical resource capable of strengthening multicultural and critical education, in contrast to the technicist logic that guides centralized curricular policies, such as the current Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC). Based on the studies of Candau (2008) and Neira (2020), the research advocates for the construction of a cultural curriculum that values dialogue among different identities and forms of knowledge, while recognizing and confronting the power relations that produce inequalities. Methodologically, this is an integrative literature review with a qualitative approach, conducted on articles published between 2015 and 2025 in Portuguese. The analyzed studies reveal that, although there are experiences involving regional narratives—especially Amazonian legends—these practices are still scarcely incorporated into the school curriculum. It is concluded that the use of cultural narratives can contribute to a more plural, inclusive, and emancipatory education, committed to valuing differences and fostering the development of critical individuals.
Ewelem Silva de Sousa Jucélia Batista Ferreira Francine de Faria Hilário Maria Simone Ribeiro Souza Livia Vitória Melo da Luz Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 587 605 CHATGPT AND PLAGIARISM: //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/18998
This research aims to present a study on plagiarism in the context of texts generated by ChatGPT. A bibliographic survey was conducted across four databases: Portal de Periódicos Capes, MDPI, IEEEXplore, and ScienceDirect. For this study, eleven articles were selected—ten international and one national. Among the gaps identified in the literature or in the field which this study belongs to, the following can be highlighted: (i) a lack of effective tools for detecting plagiarism in multiple languages; (ii) the need for regulations and guidelines regarding the use of ChatGPT in educational settings; and (iii) the absence of discussions or deeper reflections on creative co-authorship arising from the use of ChatGPT in academic writing. The findings reveal that studies on plagiarism resulting from the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) require further investigation, particularly concerning the development of tools for plagiarism detection, the ethical implications involved, and the formulation of guidelines to promote the responsible use of such technologies in academic and educational contexts
Marcelo Araújo Frazão Araújo Frazão Kássem Moraes Hauache Helena Braule Pinto Simeão Kathiane Maria Correia de Almeida Thayenne Ribeiro Alves Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 630 654 Psychology's contributions to addressing school failure //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/19002
School failure is a complex social problem involving several factors that impede students' progress in grades. For a long time, understandings of this issue focused on reductionist explanations that blamed students for their learning difficulties, using as a basis the theoretical framework provided by an elitist approach to school and educational psychology, disconnected from the social and historical reality that reinforced social inequalities. Based on this, the objective of this reflection is to discuss the production of school failure and propose ethical and political positions for school and educational psychology in addressing this issue in educational institutions. The text is divided into aspects that critically and multidimensionally define school failure and explore some of the history of school and educational psychology. It then reflects on how psychological knowledge can enter schools in a way that is committed to guaranteeing the right to education for the working classes. Far from seeking to end the discussion, I propose a school psychology approach that considers the multi-complexity of the historical production of school failure, avoiding individualistic, psychologizing reductionisms. I also propose a coordinated approach with other school stakeholders to deconstruct entrenched conceptions of school grievances and address the failure caused by the historical conditions of social exclusion in Brazil.
Daniel Cerdeira de Souza Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 655 678 Grief and resilience in elderly women who have lost their partners over the course of life //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/19005
Grief over the loss of significant people can be traumatic at any stage of life. In old age, coping with and processing grief becomes even more challenging. This study aims to understand how older women adapt to the grieving process throughout life, identifying factors that contribute to resilience in this context. This is a qualitative study conducted through a narrative literature review. It was identified that religiosity, spirituality, social support, participation in sociocultural activities, and individual resources promote resilience in old age. From a psychoanalytic perspective, grief is understood as a healthy process of elaborating loss, whereas melancholia characterizes a pathological condition. Based on Kübler-Ross, it was observed that coping with death and grief can be understood through five stages, which do not occur linearly but reflect the diversity of emotional reactions to loss. Furthermore, it was found that female aging is affected by factors such as the feminization of old age, loneliness, and social invisibility, which intensify the challenges of this period. There is a need for careful attention to older women who have experienced significant losses, in order to develop mental health care and intervention programs tailored to their specific needs
Vitória Giovanna Silva Garcia Denise Machado Duran Gutierrez Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 702 720 EXPERIENCES OF SOCIOECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS WITH CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE AND DIABETES IN MANAUS AND THEIR ASSOCIATIONS WITH DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/19006
Introduction/Rationale: The occurrence of chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in older adults is a major public health issue in today's world, especially when associated with depression. NCDs impact quality of life and can lead to the emergence of comorbidities, such as depression, which worsens health conditions. Objectives: This study investigated the experiences of socioeconomically vulnerable older adults with NCDs and their relationship with depressive symptoms. The objective was to analyze the experiences of low-income older adults living in Manaus, Amazonas, diagnosed with hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes mellitus, considered the main NCDs. Methodology: Open-ended interviews were conducted and subsequently analyzed using Thematic Content Analysis. Results: The reports highlighted additional factors associated with psychological distress, such as family conflicts, social isolation, grief, fear of death, financial difficulties, and self-neglect. Conclusions: The results indicate the need for care strategies that integrate clinical and psychosocial aspects, contributing to scientific production on the topic and to interventions aimed at the health of the elderly population of Manaus and the Northern Region of Brazil.
Thalia Nogueira da Costa Maio Rêgo de Aguiar Denise Machado Duran Gutierrez Copyright (c) 2025 2025-11-28 2025-11-28 18 3 721 740 Phenomenological-Existential Psychology and Sexual Abuse in Childhood and Adolescence: //periodicos.ufam.edu.br/index.php/amazonica/article/view/19007
The intersection between phenomenological-existential psychology and sexual abuse in childhood and adolescence involves a deep examination of the subjective experiences of affected individuals, recognizing the uniqueness of each personal trajectory.
